Mauss, Corin, and Freud - Essay Example tâ⬠Ellen Corin tends to view Maussââ¬â¢s concept of ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢ in evolution or transition as one that is influenced by the legacy of European hegemonic attitude to the cultures of the non-European country. According to her, Maussââ¬â¢s historical evaluation of ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢ is engrossed with the concept of the ââ¬Å"otherââ¬â¢ that bars the European scholars to perceive the ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢ of the non European societies as something ââ¬Å"self-interested and self indulgent, and which is determined by outsides references to clans and divinitiesâ⬠(Corin 85). In Maussââ¬â¢s conception of ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢ it is evident that the ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢ ââ¬âwhich he is concerned with- is different from the concept of person as something ââ¬Å"naturalââ¬â¢. Though he does not completely defy the natural definition of ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢, he clearly asserts this definition of ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢ as unfocused, vague and simplist ic. For Mauss, the definition that tend s to describe ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢ as something ââ¬Å"natural, clearly determined in the depth of [human] consciousnessâ⬠is, as he says at the beginning of the article, ââ¬Å"still imprecise, delicate and fragile, one requiring further elaborationâ⬠(Mauss 5). The major steps in evaluation of ââ¬Å"personââ¬â¢ lies in the following speech of Mauss, ââ¬Å"From a simple masquerade to the mask, from a ââ¬Ëroleââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦ to a ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ¦, to a name, to an individual; from the latter to a being metaphysical and moral value; from a moral consciousness to a sacred being; from the latter to a fundamental form of thought and action- the course is accomplishedâ⬠(Mauss 22) Whereas Corin tends to view the concept of person from the anthropological desire to ââ¬Å"have access to the Otherââ¬â¢s alterity and to transcend to the contingencies and boundaries of â⬠¦..cultural conditionâ⬠(Corin 81), Maussââ¬â¢s attempt to view ââ¬Ëpersonââ¬â¢ from a socio-historical point is, as Corin criticizes, biased, therefore not absolute, by the cultural hegemony of the author.
